DigiRust

Project information

Unofficial firmware modification for the Elektron Digitone II.

Musical direction

The generators target IDM, rhythmic noise / power noise, and electroacoustic music. Conventional groovebox workflows and mainstream beatmaking are outside the project's scope.

Developer hardware report

The developer reports that DigiRust modified firmware has been thoroughly tested on a real Elektron Digitone II and is currently running on that instrument without any observed issues. This report was supplied on 12 October 2026.

This is a factual report of experience on that instrument. It is not encouragement to install, an endorsement, a safety guarantee or a prediction of results on another instrument.

Verification

The browser patcher checks the exact official input, pinned patch resources, stock and modified MAIN hashes, compression round-trip, protected section bytes and the complete output SHA-256. It must produce the same DigiRust image as the macOS patcher.

The firmware's recorded development tests include host/CPU parity, stock codecs, menu and control checks, and exact-package emulated boot and front-panel execution. These checks do not establish every possible hardware or musical outcome. Read the evidence and limits ↗.

Important disclaimer

DIGITONE II ONLY. USE ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK. INSTALLING MODIFIED FIRMWARE MAY VOID YOUR MANUFACTURER WARRANTY.

DigiRust is only for the Elektron Digitone II using the exact supported official OS 1.12. Do not install the output on the original Digitone, Digitone Keys, Digitakt, Syntakt, Model:Cycles, Model:Samples or any other instrument.

This is unofficial modified firmware, not approved, supported or endorsed by Elektron. Proceed on the assumption that modification-related damage or malfunction will not be covered by manufacturer warranty or support. Actual coverage depends on applicable terms and law; this project cannot waive statutory consumer rights.

Creating, transferring and operating modified firmware are entirely at your own risk. Possible consequences include data loss, unexpected output, crashes, failed updates, inability to start, loss of normal operation and an unusable or irreversibly bricked instrument. Repair or replacement may be required at your expense.

No successful installation, recovery or future compatibility is guaranteed. Keep the official firmware available and consult Elektron's current instructions before deciding to transfer. Recovery tested on a healthy instrument is not a guarantee after every failure.

The software is provided AS IS, without warranty. To the extent permitted by law, the author, contributors and copyright holders accept no liability for consequences of its use. If you do not accept these risks, do not install the generated firmware.

Privacy

The patcher processes the selected file in browser memory. It does not upload firmware, connect to instruments, request MIDI access or send telemetry. GitHub Pages serves the site and its patch resources. The demo thumbnail loads from YouTube. Its embedded player loads when you press play.

License and distribution

DigiRust-authored material is MIT licensed. Elektron proprietary firmware is not covered by that grant; third-party licenses remain applicable. Only the patcher and modification resources are distributed, never a complete stock or modified firmware image.

The browser format/codec port derives from the bundled MIT-licensed firmware tool by Marcel Bierling. Modification additions retain the GCC runtime notices. DigiRust MIT license · Format tool license · GCC GPLv3 · Runtime exception

Versions

The browser app creates DigiRust from official OS 1.12. Patcher versions are separate from firmware revisions; the instrument's internal OS remains 1.12. The existing DigiRust 1.2.0 macOS app is also available.
